چکیده

This article develops a model for longitudinal student achievement data designed to estimate heterogeneity in teacher effects across students of different achivement levels. The model specifies interactions between teacher effects and students’ predicted scores on a test, estimating both average effects of individual teachers and interaction terms indicating whether individual teachers are differentially effective with students of different predicted scores. Using various longitudinal data sources, we find evidence of these interactions that are of relatively consistent but modest magnitude across different contexts, accounting for about 10% of the total variation in teacher effects across all students. However, the amount that the interactions matter in practice depends on how different are the groups of students taught by different teachers. Using empirical estimates of the heterogeneity of students across teachers, we find that the interactions account for about 3%-4% of total variation in teacher effects on different classes, with somewhat larger values in middle school mathematics. Our findings suggest that ignoring these interactions is not likely to introduce appreciable bias in estimated teacher effects for most teachers in most settings. The results of this study should be of interest to policymakers concerned about the validity of VAM teacher effect estimates. Modeling Student-Teacher Interactions 1

Academic Language Achievement: A Structural Equation Model of the Impact of Teacher-Student Interactions and Self-Regulated Learning

A correlational survey research design was utilized to investigate self-regulated Learning (SRL) and teacher-student interaction factors that had been realized to have contributive roles in EFL learners' academic success.  A sample of 218 EFL learners (male = 102 and female = 116) was drawn with the aid of a prior sample size calculator for the structural equation models from 645 students. They...

Teachers and the gender gaps in student achievement

In the United States, girls outperform boys in measures of reading achievement while generally underperforming in science and mathematics. One major class of explanations for these gaps involves the gender-based interactions between students and teachers (e.g., role-model and Pygmalion effects). However, the evidence on whether these interactions actually matter is limited and contradictory. In...

Investigating the Impacts of Teacher-Student Interactions on Improving Learners' Academic Achievements: The Role of Academic Interest

Various predictive research designs have been used to discover the relationship between learners' aca- demic achievement and the degree of teacher-student interactions they receive individually or in a group and the mediating role of their academic interest in learning. How these relation- ships/correlations work in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) setting, however, has remained a r...

Individual Teacher Incentives and Student Performance

This paper is the first to systematically document the relationship between individual teacher performance incentives and student achievement using the United States data. We combine data from the National Education Longitudinal Survey on schools, students, and their families with our own survey conducted in 2000 regarding the use of teacher incentives. This survey on teacher incentives has uni...
